Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is a type of treatment for cancer patients that uses high energy radiation.  Radiation therapists are members of the cancer care team responsible for delivering prescribed radiation treatments.  Radiation therapists are involved in preparing patients for radiation treatments by positioning them and fabricating devises to aide in re-positioning, designing the treatment plan and determining the placement of dose as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist, and daily treatment delivery.  There are some radiation therapists that specialize just in treatment planning and they are known as dosimetrists.

The Prince Edward Island Cancer Treatment Center has two treatment machines, called linear accelerators, that are used to deliver the dose of treatment that is prescribed.  We are using the most advanced techniques available, including Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT).Radiation therapists play an important role in patient care and work closely with other members of the cancer care team to ensure the best patient care and accurate treatment delivery.
